Thermal Flying & Route-Finding Course
This course bridges the gap between local soaring and true cross-country flying. Over 5 days you will refine your thermal technique, learn to read the terrain and convergence lines of the Haute-Provence valleys, and take your first steps in route-finding — choosing a direction and adapting your plan in the air.
Digne-les-Bains offers ideal conditions for this progression: reliable thermals, a rich variety of ridges and valleys, and distances that let you push your comfort zone without committing to extreme XC right away.
Each day combines a weather briefing, coached flights with radio guidance, and a thorough GPS track debriefing. By the end of the week you will feel confident flying for an hour or more, making decisions in the air, and planning your first longer routes.
Program
- •Thermal centering and efficient climb techniques
- •Reading the terrain: ridges, triggers and convergence lines
- •Route-finding basics — choosing a direction and adapting in-flight
- •Use of flight instruments (vario, GPS) for decision-making
- •Daily debriefing with GPS track analysis
Prerequisites
Autonomous thermal pilot. Comfortable with flights of at least 30–45 minutes. FFVL Pilot certificate recommended.
